Top Five Essential Oils for Winter
“What are your favorite five essential oils for winter? “
I was recently asked that question and recommended that I put my suggestions in writing and share it with the world. Well, the request came as more of a challenge to me having to decide on my favorite essential oils. But what do you know? Here I am.
So, before sharing with you about our family’s favorite winter season “oily” regiments, let me quickly introduce myself and tell you why our family chooses to use essential oils exclusively from Young Living for a well-balanced, year-round, effective and powerful over-all wellness support.
Please know, that I can only speak to Essential Oils from Young Living in this post, as those are the only ones our family uses. Even though they might seem to be a more “expensive” choice compared to other products on the market, we primarily choose to purchase with Young Living Essential Oils for reasons of better quality, higher effectiveness and uncompromised purity. Which, in the end, actually saves money.
So, considering we all either pay a bit towards our continued wellness daily or continually pay for illnesses later, we see Young Living oils and essential oil products as an investment in our health. With Young Living’s versatile and powerful essential oils, it often literally takes only a drop of oil used or inhaled to experience an effect on the body within minutes or seconds, whether to calm, rejuvenate or energize the body.
Also, I am continuously studying and educating myself about these oils because of their exceptional quality over other essential oils on the market. The guaranteed stringent growing, harvesting and distilling processes YL applies for EACH plant/oil make ALL the difference here.
I am not a medical professional, so the information I am providing here is not meant to diagnose, prescribe, treat or cure, but rather as “lessons learned” by one experience mother …to you : ) If my experiences can help you glean valuable suggestions for your own life and prevent you from experiencing certain hardships, this post will have served its purpose and I will have done my job well.

Meet Our Guest
My story with essential oils goes way back to when I was a teenager living in Germany….After having grown up with an immune system that was depleted from continuous use of medications all my life (and therefore poor gut health), the homeopathic doctor I met after moving away from home suggested I include the aromatic and topical use of essential oils on my path toward better lifestyle choices.
I have kept on that journey since.
Many years later and an ocean away, that journey really took a rather interesting turn for our family. About 4 years ago, a homeschool friend in Texas introduced me to YL’s essential oils by blessing me, a stressed-out, tired and over-scheduled mother, with an oily shoulder massage.
After her prayers for me were said, I immediately knew that her oils were superior to the ones I was using at that time (which I still brought back from my regular visits to Germany). I had never felt such immediate and positive effects from the use of essential oils on my body. Her oils were clearly different both in quality and potency…hands down.
Up to that point, I felt that the oils I was using were my best choices, considering the quality of the essential oils available here in the USA. That opinion was changed that very moment….
By now I was married, had six children, and held the title of a “military, homeschooling mom” – just a “regular mom”.
Since then, I learned a great deal about essential oils! And it has now been almost 5 years.
Even so, I would not call myself an “expert” or claim to “know-it-all”, I simply LOVE researching to find out things I didn’t know before about essential oils, particularly those oils from our favorite company – Young Living. So, I do! …and so far, this amounts to A LOT of research info available to myself, my family and others, like yourself.

Here are our family’s favorites Young Living Essential oils/oil blends to use daily during the cold winter months to ease life’s stresses:
#5 R.C. EO blend
This one is a total powerhouse (take my word on that!) of different oils, like three different types of Eucalyptus (Radiata, Globulus, and Citriodora), Myrtle, Pine, Spruce, Marjoram, Lavender, Cypress and Peppermint YLEOs.
If you want to diffuse something that powers a healthy atmosphere in your whole house, across several rooms, AND can benefit a multitude of people all at once during the winter season, this one is IT!
However, remember that the potent essential oil choices for this blend might make it too strong for the littlest of your family members, as well as some family pets, to use topically. The oils are completely safe, but everyone reacts differently to oils and especially the blending of different oils, so rather than feeling over-powered by it, we prefer to use it more frequently and adding only a few drops in our diffuser to support respiratory and lung health.
Additionally, we typically apply it during massage by adding a drop or two diluted (choose your favorite carrier oil). We choose to apply it to the bottom of our feet before sleep to slow down absorption and be able to benefit from the oils all night long.
R.C. encourages relaxed muscles and supports the respiratory system. It also feels equally great massaged on the back or chest before exercising or walking outside. This oil is a top choice to support better breathing and clear lungs. It is truly an invigorating, clarifying, comforting and yet uplifting oil blend to use during the winter months.

#4 Thieves (Vitality*) EO blend
This too is a very potent and super-efficient EO blend that no home should ever be without. If you have someone breathing and growing (older) in your home, this oil will come in handy more than once a day.
Strengthen your immune system, support your digestive and respiratory system, improve your mental focus and emotional well-being with Lemon, Eucalyptus Radiata, Clove, Cinnamon and Rosemary essential oils all throughout the gloomiest days of the year, and even afterward.
We use it daily in one way or another. Weather in the different kinds of toothpaste YL offers, in their Thieves spray and hand purifier, in our laundry and dishwashing soaps, in their loved-by-all Inner Defense supplement, and even in our favorite YL products during winter-the Thieves lozenges and cough drops.

#3 Peppermint (Vitality*) EO
This oil is simple, yet powerful and effective in performance. Talking about performance, this oil is a great choice to support oxygen flow to every cell of your body before and during exercise, and when being “cooped up” inside during bad weather.
We diffuse it to support our respiratory and digestive systems. We love using it to make a tea by adding a drop of Peppermint Vitality EO to a bit of raw honey on a spoon and run warm water over it into a cup.
This oil has become one of our favorites for a massage, or for use in a bath soak along with ground oats and some Epsom salt. These bath soaks feel great for the body after the kids’ dance routines, my yoga, or a hard day at your work or on the farm.
This oil is gentle, yet potent even when diluted, and should be used carefully and sparingly with children, if you so choose.

Peppermint oil may be also be used as a “driver oil”, as it will “drive” in another EO deeper when layered (massaged in) on top of it?
#2 Copaiba (Vitality*) EO
This oil is a favorite for many of our family members, because of its gentle, grounding aroma, yet potent effects on the overall health and well-being of the body’s systems during the darkest month of the year.
It contains powerful beta-caryophyllene compounds that make it well suited for muscle and respiratory support, and gentle enough to be used as part of a DIY chest rub with some cold-whipped, expeller pressed coconut oil for kids (keep the rest for later or mix it with your peppermint massage mix).

Copaiba EO is extracted as a resin directly from the Copaiba tree, rather than distilled from plants parts? It is often called the “Magnifier” oil, as it will magnify the effects of the oil you are adding it to. Try adding a drop to your favorite unbleached, organic tea, like rooibos or chamomile, to bring out the complex flavors and support a healthy, daily wellness regimen and overall comfort…or mix it in your bath soak blend
#1 Lavender (Vitality*) EO
As this is probably THE most versatile of all EOs available, we NEVER leave home without it.
Whether for skin support on feet, legs or lips; supporting our mental functions during homework by diffusing (with a drop of peppermint oil, remember the “driver”?); taking a relaxing bath soak before bedtime; freshening up the laundry in the dryer; using it with coconut oil to brush into our hair daily; or cleaning and oxygenating the stale indoor air indoor.
If you don’t know which oil to use, try this one <3 So gentle even without dilution, it’s a favorite to use to sooth and relax the little people that are most “fragile” in your home (diluted to comfort; if in doubt, start on the feet).

Because of the versatility and effectiveness of this oil, it is called by many the “Swiss Army Knife of Eos”. From head to toe, keep this one close by and use it whenever you are in need of a “balancer” oil.
One last thought. As a mom and “gatekeeper” of our home, I refuse to be caught with my wellness guards down or being out of stock on any of these and other wonderfully beneficial essential oil (infused) YL products. Our home is well stocked with the health-supporting supplies we know we WILL need for the winter months (with their own set of travails each year) cast upon each home, school, and church…
My encouragement: Make your wellness a monthly goal and investment. You invest in the preservation of your car with maintenance routines, why you’re your own body. You may be able to replace the one when it fails you, but NOT so with the other.
