Word of the Year: “Lagom” (2018)

Introduction

Hey Friends,

What will the new year bring for you? Where are your efforts going to be concentrated? What are you hoping to gain or actualize this upcoming year?

I don’t know about you, but every year I try to pick one word that defines what I am trying to focus on during that particular year. Not only does this give me something to concentrate on, but also I can more easily plan ways to achieve my set goal. I know exactly what I am looking to accomplish.

Instead of having this half thought-out resolution with no game plan and no thought, I have meticulously written out my priorities.  I have established steps to achieve my goals and found a common thread in this carefully selected word. This word encompasses exactly where I am or where I am trying to go in life.

Some years it’s easy. I know exactly what I need to work on, and exactly what I want to have produced during that particular year.

Other years it’s hard. Really hard. Sometimes, I’m not sure which season of life I’m in, or what my priorities should be for that given year.

A few years I have just felt overwhelmed. I have felt like there are a plethora of ambitions I could, or should, be committing myself to. I realize I can’t do it all, but I can’t seem to find what exactly should be worthy of my time and attention.

That’s where brainstorming, and list making, and goal setting, and careful word choosing come into play. I reflect on what I want to cultivate in my life and then ultimately select a goal (and word that mirrors this objective) for the year- so that I may live my life with intention and purpose.

I hope my word for the year will inspire you to define your ambitions and set a purposeful direction for your life in the new year.

Word of the Year: “Lagom” (2018)

I had a difficult time trying to define my intention for the next year. What season of life was I in? I had no idea what I should be striving to attain next year, or what I should be attempting to grow in my life now.

My goal setting and self-reflecting were harder than usual. How can you set your attention for the next year, if you don’t even know where you are right now?

So, I started writing out what worked for me (or didn’t work for me this year. I created a scorecard (1-10) and rated the categories of my life. Where I was now, why I was there, and how I was going to improve.

That’s when it hit me. I was in the season of change.

The reason I felt so overwhelmed was that I have added new responsibilities and roles in my life. I hadn’t been down this road before. There were no directions or maps to help me explore this new territory.

I crave purpose and clarity as I try to navigate new parts of my life.

And those are exactly the words that defined my goal for next year.

Balance

Purpose

Clarity

Intention

Enough

Simplicity

Nourish

Rest

Focus

Mindfulness

Authenticity

and finally, I settled on…

Lagom

Lagom is a Swedish word. There is no real English equivalent to define this word. Some have defined it as meaning “just right”, or “optimal”.

It means balance. Balance in your life, in your home, in your work, in your play.

The more I read about lagom, the more I realized it wasn’t static, it is changing. Just as this season of my life is changing.

And that is why I have handpicked lagom as my word for the year.  I have set my sights on balance during a season of change.

I love that your word is so unique! And the meaning behind it. I could definitely use more balance in 2018. I did a word of the year two years ago, but haven’t really since. I may need to change that. Thanks for the inspiration!

I found it while the “Hygge” trend was all the rage. And while I’m all for comfy cozy, I’d say I’d rather have balance!

what do you think?
